Makeup artist Feride Uslu and husband Jan Mihm speak with the zeal of infomercial hosts. "Give me your hand and let me show you," commands Uslu before gently blowing on the offered appendage. "Feel the air? It's all about the feeling." After years of experimenting, Uslu and Mihm have finally perfected Uslu Airlines, an innovative makeup system that utilizes airbrush technology. The device sprays makeup on the face in a fine, sheer mist that covers quickly and evenly. The result is smooth, poreless-looking skin. "We started out with oversized compressors from art supply stores and cake-decorating machines," explains Mihm, "and we mixed various combinations of makeup until we found a formula that worked. Our apartment looked like a mini-laboratory." The finished product is about the size of a portable CD player with a rechargeable battery that is the same size as a mobile phone's and can be recharged in any country in the world. "The machine does things that you cannot do with a sponge or brush," continues Uslu, still in infomercial mode. "And you don't have to be a makeup artist to use this-all you have to do is push the little button. Along with its ease, the airbrush is also much quicker than conventional makeup tools-so designers may now be able to get their girls out on the runway with fewer delays.
